AltiGen Communications Reports Record Fourth Quarter Revenue

Fourth Quarter Revenue Up 15% to $5.2 Million due to Growth in System Sales — Board Approves Share Repurchase Program for Up to $2 Million -

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — AltiGen Communications, Inc. , a leading provider of VoIP business phone systems and Unified Communications solutions for small-to-medium businesses (SMBs), including companies with multiple distributed locations, branch offices and call centers, reported its financial results for the fiscal 2007 fourth quarter and year ended September 30, 2007.

Gilbert Hu, chairman and CEO, stated, “Our record fourth quarter revenue reflects our efforts to accelerate growth and build shareholder value. During 2007, we strengthened management, expanded the sales model, enhanced our products and began executing on our new strategic business plan. As a result, in the fourth quarter, we increased both revenue by 15 percent, compared to the fourth quarter of 2006, and gross profit to 56 percent of revenue, versus 55 percent last year. We are very excited about the upward trend in revenue this quarter, and we believe this solid momentum will continue.”

Jeremiah Fleming, AltiGen’s president and COO, said, “Over the past six months, we placed a significant focus on amplifying our distribution channel. During this time, we doubled our sales organization by adding channel sales, strategic account and telemarketing personnel. We continue to integrate quality value added resellers (VARs) into our team and currently have well over 200 in North America. We recently reached an agreement with a leading North American master distributor of business telephone and computer telephony products, bringing exposure to thousands of resellers. We also released the new 5.1 version of our award-winning IP-PBX, which enables us to support lower cost IP trunking and standard third party endpoints and has resulted in greater scalability. The combination of all these factors with our new automated multi-site enterprise communications manager has positioned us well to capture the growing demand for VoIP and Unified Communications among small, medium and multi-site businesses.”

“In fact, the market’s increasing emphasis on Unified Communications bodes particularly well for AltiGen, as we offer solutions that unify the various aspects of business communications — such as voice, email, fax and messaging — across one or more locations,” Fleming added. “Our single server architecture provides an integrated VoIP business phone system and Unified Communications platform that immediately delivers increased productivity and cost savings. Simultaneously, our software-based system enables companies to implement the features they need now, with the security that they can easily add more features, users and locations as future growth requires.”

SunRocket leaves void for callers on Internet

By Matt Richtel
The New York Times

Waiting for an important phone call can be stressful. As Marshel Emery can attest, it is doubly so when your phone company has just ceased to exist.

Emery, 33, low on funds and with three children to support, recently applied for jobs at several law enforcement agencies in Tennessee. But his phone service is provided by SunRocket, an Internet telephone company that went out of business without warning last week, leaving its roughly 220,000 customers in the lurch.

Some have no service. Others still do, but like Emery they have been told that it could be cut off at any moment.

Although SunRocket was tiny by the standards of the telecommunications industry, it has ensured itself a place in the history of the digital era by being the first significant Internet telephone provider to go out of business. Its collapse raises questions about what responsibility such companies have to their customers–and about how they should be regulated, given how essential many people consider phone service to be.

“It’s your lifeline. It’s your food line,” said Emery, who lives in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. “If you’re going to pull somebody’s phone line, they should know about it.”

The SunRocket meltdown was further complicated because many customers paid $199 upfront for a year of unlimited service, and it is not clear if any of them will receive a refund.

The sudden disappearance of a phone company would have been unthinkable in the past, when telephone service was treated as a veritable unalienable right, like electricity, and being a phone company usually meant owning a physical network of switches, cables and poles.

Pennsylvania Policy Update – VoIP

State Senator Rob Wonderling, along with Senator Connie Williams and several other cosponsors, introduced the The Voice over Internet Freedom Act. The legislation would keep Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) other IP enabled services free of unnecessary economic regulation, stimulating deployment of new technology, promote new investments in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, and, most importantly, benefit Pennsylvania consumers.VoIP already is giving Pennsylvanians an efficient, effective alternative for voice service.  The powerful capabilities of VoIP technology give consumers exciting new services at affordable prices, such as the ability to manage voice messaging from their computers, the ability to customize routing of incoming calls based on the calling number, and the ability to “dial” a number by clicking it on a computer screen

VoIP services are emerging in a highly competitive environment, where providers such as Vonage, AT&T CallVantage, Packet 8, Sunrocket, Voicewing and Optimum Voice not only compete with one another, they also compete with a host of other voice service providers, including Verizon, wireless carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon Wireless, and also cable telephony providers such as Comcast (which uses VoIP technology to deliver its voice services).
Regulation of VoIP would be hugely counterproductive. It would slow carriers’ ability to respond to the market and would retard their incentives for investment and innovation, which is why this legislation is so important. Several other states, including New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia already have passed legislation that would keep VoIP service free of regulation, and there now is an opportunity to join its regional competitors in doing the same. The other sponsors of the bill are: Sen. Jake Corman; Sen. Jane Orie; Sen. Stewart Greenleaf; Sen. Edwin Erickson; Sen. John Rafferty; Sen. Vince Fumo; Sen. Jeff Piccola; Sen. Mike Folmer; Sen. Shirley Kitchen; Sen. Pat Browne; Sen. Robert Mellow; Sen. Michael O’Pake; Sen. Wayne Fontana; Sen. Leanna Washington; Sen. Roger Madigan; Sen. Charles McIllhinney; Sen. Jay Costa; and Sen. Vince Hughes.
