Nothing on the internet is really “Free”

Dan Weaver, Technical Consultant Bardissi Enterprises

Have you ever been on the internet and been tempted to click on the “you’ve won a free whatever” banner? Most of us have. But as the title states, nothing on the internet is really free. Sure it may say you’ve won a free “whatever”, but do they really plan on giving you a free item of the value of that item for nothing? I don’t think so. Free software downloads are not really free.

The majority of free software programs have spyware, popup banner programs or even worse malware. Spyware basically spies on what you’re doing and sends back the information for marketing purposes. Popup banner programs are just that, programs that randomly deploy popup banners hoping that you will click them. The people who write the programs get a certain amount of money per popup or click, so they are making money off of you without you even knowing it. Malware is a relatively new term. Wikipedia defines it as software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a portmanteau of the words "malicious" and "software". The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code”. They can be used to steal personal information off your computer and even get your credit card numbers and bank account login information.

You may say “how is that possible, I use a secure connection over the internet”. While your web browser may say it’s secure, the security is from your computer to the host computer via the internet. If your computer is compromised, the data can be collected from your computer and sent back to their system and sold or used. I’ve personally seem many computers with spyware, and what it does to your computer is not pretty. Most computers slow down to a grinding halt when starting up or running programs. If you notice your computer is sluggish, it’s probably not because it’s cold; it’s probably because it’s infected with one of the above mentioned programs.  Random “out of nowhere” popup adds popping up, is another sign you may have spyware.

There are free software download sites, such as cnet download that I would personally trust. However, if you’re thinking about downloading a free software program do a little research. This research is as simple as typing the name of the program in a common search engine and scrolling down through the previews and looking for keywords like “spyware, malware or pop-up’s”. Most of the time if the program is dirty it will be noted in the first 3 pages on the search engine. This is the method I personally use before downloading freeware (free programs). It has kept me safe quite a few times. So, in conclusion, always remember that anything free will usually have strings attached and in the case of the internet, those strings are going to be viruses of one type or another.
