BARDISSI READER RESPONSE

Dave from Lansdale, wrote us regarding our recent column on Vista. His comment is as follows:

In response to your statement: "However, you will be at a serious disadvantage in terms of security since Microsoft will also stop creating patches for operating system vulnerabilities, which is a real security concern..."

Although mainstream support does end in 2009, XP then goes into extended support till 2014.  This includes security patches.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information you provided regarding the past “Tech Talk” column on Vista. I would submit to you, that our column, on Vista and being prepared to upgrade was very accurate and still holds true. What you are referring to, in your response, is the aspect of “Hotfixes” which would only be provided on a user payment basis.

Hotfixes are actually compiled into security patches. Therefore, once into the extended support phase meaning after June 2009, Microsoft will only create "critical" patches for those systems. Hotfix's would be a paid situation. For the general public, unless under agreement from Microsoft, you will be in a situation

where if you’re not paying Microsoft for the hotfixs, then you will still be at risk since Microsoft will not be giving you all "security patches coming from hotfixes"

which many do. If you did not know, many of the service packs that Microsoft releases are a laundry list of hotfixes that come out in one shot hence the whole idea of a service pack.

Nonetheless, for the home environment and small to mid range businesses who will not pay Microsoft under a support contract for this "extended support" our recommendation is to stay with a product in "mainstream support". One other thing to note, just because Microsoft offers "extended product support" does not mean that all the other third party software and hardware manufacturers will offer that same support on their products. Again, that's why our recommendation is to stay with products in "mainstream support" meaning for Windows XP users not under contract with Microsoft for "extended support" take the June 2009 deadline very seriously.

We thank all of our “Tech Talk” readers, for reading our column and we appreciate your feed back. Feel free to correspond with us anytime as your opinions are well received and always relevant.

Holiday Shopping on the Web

By Mike Bianchini, Network Technician Bardissi Enterprises

The holiday season is upon us and that means many groans for many out there as this means crowded malls and long lines. However, there is relief. The digital age has brought us many great things including shopping on the internet. Over the past few years many more people have been using the internet to complete their holiday buying from the comfort of their homes.  Though many have apprehensions about giving out their credit card information, the web is actually a very safe way to shop.  Here are some tips to help you get the best out of your internet shopping experience.

Most of the websites out there are safe. If you are using the latest version of your web browser (internet explorer, firefox, safari) then you are pretty much safe from sites that will try to steal your credit information. To be extra safe be sure to use a credit card that has buyer protection and visit reputable websites.

One of the best reasons to use the web for your holiday shopping is for the deals. You can often find better prices on items online than in the store.  Here are a few websites that give you deals on the web.

www.dealighted.com – This website has a list of the hottest deals on almost everything on the internet and in stores. It is updated in real time so you get the most up to date news on deals.

www.woot.com – Woot is a different kind of shopping experience. Woot offers a new deal every day. Most of these deals are outrageously good.

www.sundaysaver.com – Most people find out deals by seeing what’s in the Sunday ads. This site lists all of the ads in one place.

These are just a few sites that list deals. So this holiday give shopping online a try and see how many deals you can get! You’ll find it’s easy, fun, and less stressful. For more information about shopping on line, you can send us an email and we’ll be happy to give you more tips on websites that you can visit for holiday shopping deals.
