Cooling Your System

Dan Weaver, Technical Consultant Bardissi Enterprises

This month’s topic, which is often neglected, is system cooling. Most systems come with standard fans. One fan in the power supply and one fan on the processor. However, I have found that some times this is not enough. While running high processor use applications I’ve noticed the system processor can get up to 60 degrees Centigrade, Which converts to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ve also noticed that under high video processing applications your video card can over heat as well, causing, in some cases, lines to come across your computer screen as you work. Very often the cooling fans you currently have may become clogged with dust, which can cause them to burn out or simply stop spinning. Most times this can be avoided by simply cleaning out the computer from time to time, and in most systems can take as little as 5 minutes to perform.

If your computer is making strange intermittent, at times, humming sounds and hasn’t been cleaned in a year or two, you could have a clogged fan. If your system is under warranty and has a warranty tag covering the case lid and case you may want to take it in to be serviced or have your IT service and support provider pick it up and clean it. If, however, you are adventurous and your system is out of warranty, a simple can of compressed air can be used to clean out the offending dust and other particles (especially if you have pets running around).  Cans of compressed air can be bought at almost any computer store or shop. You will also, sometimes need a Phillip’s screwdriver to remove the side cover.

NEVER clean a computer while it is plugged in or turned on.  Make sure you take the computer outside on a dry day before blowing out the dust, as this may cause a dust storm in your house, and even get in your eyes if you are within 2 feet of the computer. This has happened more then one time to me.  Dust in the system isn’t always a bad thing, from what I’m told. According to a few IT professionals I’ve talked to, they state that dust absorbs moisture and moisture is a known enemy of all electronics.

If you let your computer run constantly, as I do, you may want to invest in a few simple fan upgrades to keep temperatures down. Most PC cases have provisions for two additional fans that can be installed in under 20 minutes with basic household tools. Or you can have your local service shop perform this operation. Something as simple as this can save you hours of down time and lost money in repairs and new hardware.
