Just the F.A.Q’s

Mike Bianchini – Network Technician, Bardissi Enterprises

This newsletter article deals with the frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q’s) we often get asked.

“Should I leave my computer on or turn it off every night?”

I get this question more than any other. The answer is…whatever you feel like doing. There is no right or wrong answer for this. Eight or so years ago I probably would have recommended you turn off your computer but, today it is perfectly safe to leave it on days at a time.

Here are a few reasons to leave them on:

1.     Anti-virus program updates and synchronization can run while you sleep. These sometimes can slow your computer while you are on it so why not run them when you are not using the system.

2.     How many times have you shut off your computer and realized you forgot to do something on it? Leave it on or put it on hibernate mode. Then when you want to access it you can pretty much do so instantly.

3.     While yes, you can save money by turning off your computer every night, the amount you can save has greatly decreased with today’s new energy efficient machines and monitors.

You might want to turn it off:

1.     To save money on energy costs.  Most users will save around $50 a year by shutting off their system every night.

2.     To keep your system fresher. Temporary files that windows normally deletes or shuts down can build up and slow your system down a little bit.

My recommendation is that if you use your computer daily and like to quickly access your system leave it on. If you notice your system is starting to slow down, restart your system.  You might want to use the sleep or hibernate feature in windows when you are done using your system for the night or day.  If you are leaving for vacation or know that you will not be using your system for a few days, then I recommend you turn it off.  What do I do? I leave it on all day and put it on sleep mode at night.

This week we are giving you the top 10 websites according to http://www.100bestwebsites.org

1
Yahoo is your Online Free Treasure Room! An outstanding search engine (especially for "official" websites), it also provides a cornucopia of free services: free email, maps, Yellow Pages, games, shopping, news, finance, sports, live chat -- the list just goes on and on and on! By far (in our opinion), Yahoo is the best site on the Web!
2
We believe Google is simply the best tool on the Web for finding just about anything (except possibly "official" websites). It is screamingly fast, sleek, streamlined, and as comprehensive as a search tool can be.
3
Amazon is nothing less than a revolution in how the world shops. It is a huge step forward in the achievement of an ideal competitive market. It is user-friendly, vast, and reliable.

5
Much of the greatest literature in the history of humankind will be found in full text form (and free of charge) at this amazing site. In addition, many useful reference tools are here (also free!)

7
A bold endeavor in online journalism, Google News provides you hundreds of news sources (typically) for each of the major stories of the day. Just find the story that interests you on the main page, and you will see something like "227 related" or "535 related" just beneath it. Click this to see the extensive range of news sources available for the story you are after! (Its database of past news is also searchable.)
